Gin Rummy Classic is played with ten cards which are to be formed into melds (runs and/or sets).

The card from the deck is turned face up which indicates that it is the start of the discard pile. The rest of the deck is positioned face down and is called the stock pile.

The players look at and sort their cards in hand to form sets and/or run.

A player who can meet the requirement of not more than 10 deadwood can knock.

Knocking with no unmatched cards is called going gin, and it earns a special bonus.
